THE HISTORY OF HURUMA ISTITUTE OF HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES
HurumaSchool of nursing formally Huruma Institute of Health and Allied Sciences established on 1981 and the first class started in 1983 under Dr Bernadina Allespach from USWISS.

THE FOUNDER OF HURUMA IHAS
Huruma Institute of Health and Allied Sciences is one of three non-profit Faith-Based Health training institution under the Roman Catholic Church Diocese of Moshi - Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is owned by the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Kilimanjaro. It is situated in Rombo District 57 kilometers from Moshi municipality at the foot of famous Mount Kilimanjaro. It is within the Huruma Hospital nearby the attractive Mount Kilimanjaro which is within the famous tourist’s area of the Northern corridor of Tanzania.
The Institute was started ascertificate level for those students completed standard seven and Form four. The Institute was able to take students within the country and few from outside the country like Kenya. The first classes were graduate in 1987. Were 25 Students.
THE FIRST CLASS OF NURSING AT HURUMA IHAS
In 1992 the Ministry of Health award the College to offer Diploma level for those students completed form four and form six with good pass of science subjects. They pursuing diploma of Nursing and Midwifery for four years. In 2008 the curriculum reformed from four years to three years. The first graduates for three years in 2011.

In 2014 the NACTE granted full accreditation of Institution. When the name of college change to Huruma Institute of Health and Allied Sciences. These opportunities enable the Institution to run different courses. In 2020 the college start the course of Diploma in Social work. In The

2021 the Institution add another course of Diploma in Clinical medicine. In 2025 the Institution will start the Diploma in Radiology.

Huruma Institute of Health an Allied sciences were registered by Tanzania Nurses and Midwifery Council [TNMC] (REG NUMBER IS 03-028) License number (0054) and the National council of the Technical Education [NACTE]. The Institute registration number is REG/HAS/059. National Center for Technical Education [NACTE] and Tanzania Nurses and Midwifery Council [TNMC] approvedcurriculumin implementing its program.

THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE OF ISTITUTION

To ensure and raise the standard of health care within the community as well as the whole country and outside the country.

To enable the student to Assess, Plan, Implement and Evaluate Health promotion in all clients and Community as large.

To build capacity to participate in the implementation of Nation health police and its accompanying operational guideline.

To provide academic facilities in the relevant fields of Health and Allied health Sciences including technology and or through schools, colleges or institutes within and outside the Country

Prepare students through regular and professional courses in the fields of Health and Allied Sciences for degrees, diplomas, certificates and other awards of the Huruma Institute of Health and Allied Sciences

Prepare candidates to work with the communities and other stakeholders internally and externally in Tanzania in health and Social Sectors for the purpose of the better development and strengthening of the National health and social welfare.

Assume responsibility within the United Republic of Tanzania for higher level education in Health and Allied Science through academic programmes as per the Institute’s prospectus, for that purpose to make provision for places and centers of learning , education, training research consultancy

Initiate, promote and conduct basic and allied health sciences training mentorship, coaching on both long and short courses

Grant degrees, diplomas, certificates and other awards according to the programmes offered by the Institute.

Affiliate with other institutions and accept attendance at courses of study in such institution for relevant awards of the Institute

Recognize qualified members of the teaching staff of any college or similar institute of higher education whether affiliated to the Institute or not as part of teachers of the Institute.

Initiate and conduct basic and applied research in the field of health, Allied health Sciences and Social Welfare.

Develop and promote Continuing Professional Education programs for in service health workers in the councils to build their capacity while working at the same time.

Build, develop, renovate, rehabilitate, refurbish, equip and maintain HIHAS infrastructure (buildings, library, Skills labs, ICT labs, and Clinical areas) for the beneficiaries of the programs offered.

Cooperate with national and international institutions in the initiation and conducting cooperative research and training programs for the mutual benefits of both parties.

Mainstream gender issue and equal opportunities in all HIHAS programs and activities.

Enter into agreements and contracts with any institution for the incorporation of that institution into the Institute.

Complete the government efforts in the production of personnel in the health sector, key policy makers, and other experts in the health sector.
Initiate and perform consultancies or any legal fundraising activities in the field of health, allied health sciences and social welfare for a sustainable institution.
